A Tutorial on how to Create a List for a Blog Post
A simple solution to creating links, adding value to your blog is creating a list that people will love!
We all know that we need to create links both going out and coming into our blog site. We can do this by creating a post, basing it on something you have read and linking to that persons blog.
We can also create links by:
- Commenting to other blogs ( especially those within our niche/interest group)
- Using forums in our signatures and with good quality posts
- Being active in various social communities
But there is another way that is eloquent in its simplicity can be very interesting, adds unique content to your blog and helps create traffic and links to you.
Do You want to know how?
Good! you clicked on the read more button
Thank you.
Instead of giving you the same old – same old wording, I decided to use a different approach, an object lesson if you will.
I am going to use one of our member’s blogs from Success Patrol…don’t worry I will let him know
If you go to All Sports on the Web, you will notice that Walt ( the blogger) loves hockey.
So what would be a great way to create a list, fuel his passion for the game of hockey and create links?
Create a list of people he knows or wants to know who share his passion.
The very first thing I did was go to Walt’s blog and found who he had as friends who also talked about the NHL. When I took notes, I didn’t just give the basic URl for example CBC.ca. I looked for any stories on NHL Hockey that these people had talked about.
So. instead of the generic :
I used one of their stories on Hockey URL: http://archives.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/topics/3515/
I then went through Walt’s sports friends blogs one by one, doing the same thing every time.
so just for one more example:
http://bleacherreport.com/ – the generic link
here is the page about a story on NHL hockey:
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/61246-bts-2008-09-nhl-season-preview-new-york-islanders
Walt then could do something to increase not only possible new friends, but also creating linking, go to the Google Search Bar and find bloggers who also have talked on sports specifically NHL hockey.
I found numerous bloggers who are interested in NHL hockey, so looking through them I made my choices – here are my 3 blogs for this illustration:
When I copied the URLS, I remembered to keep a copy of these bloggers Title’s of their bloggers blog sites. If I had been doing this list for myself I would have made a point of leaving a comment to these bloggers, thus introducing myself, stating my thoughts on their story and creating a link to me and to them also.
( blog tip: when doing these kinds of lists or even any post that you can connect to any story that you have done, in your “leave a reply Website URl, point it to a story on what is being talked about. In this case Walt would point it to any of the stories he has done on the NHL.)
Here are examples:
ATSDatabase’s Weblog
http://atsdatabase.wordpress.com/2008/09/22/new-nhl-coaches-for-the-2008-season/
Puck Daddy
http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy
James Mirtle- A hockey Journalists blog
http://mirtle.blogspot.com/2007/12/adventures-in-broadcasting-hockey-night.html
Now that we have all our information assembled how do we create a post?
We need a Title. Always use some of your Keywords in your Title
while there are many ways to word this Title, I am going to choose:
Sports on the Web - NHL Hockey Friends
As this is a post on friends who love NHL Hockey as Walt does then the actual post is going to be quite short.
So one way that Walt might word this post is:
While Sports of all kinds whether on the web or off line has always been something that has had more than a passing interest to me, I have to admit that I love Hockey, especially NHL Hockey. I thought it would be nice for me to introduce other bloggers who also share my love of this wonderful sport:
James Mirtle- A hockey Journalists blog
Please welcome my friends and sport enthusiasts and maybe go say hello.
Just tell them that Walt from All Sports on the Web sent you.
—————————————————————————————
In actual time, this post for Walt took a whole 20 minutes.
Walt would not be limited on how long the list is, as long as it is relevant to his topic.
We hope this has helped you understand a little about the power of lists in a very practical way.
Try this idea for your blog, have some fun, create links and make new friends.
To Your Success,
Success BlogNet Team
P.S. Walt’s blog is just one of the blogs that has been nominated for the Best Sports Blog Category on BlogNet Awards. When you go, Vote and nominate for an Entry into the Comment Cash Contest.

Yes Diane a very good post to illustrate the use of doing a short post that includes a list of like minded bloggers. Just another way to link to blogs in your niche. Well done and thanks for using me as an example.
